250GB Western Digital Hard Drive sounds like there's sand in it?

So, I got this old computer sitting around collecting dust. The computer was originally manufactured somewhere around August 2008 and I bought it back in October of 2008. The Hard Drive's release date is Aug 5 2008 and it has 250GB. My main newer computer with a 160GB Western Digital Blue Hard Drive (doesn't make a sound when I shake it, sounds mint clean) has been running out of space and I thought I could stick the 250GB HDD from the old computer into this computer for an extra storage device. I unscrewed the hard drive from the old computer, shaked it a slight bit and it sounds like theres sand in it? I've seen some people having the same similar problem with Western Digital hard drives sounding like there's sand in it. As I opened my newer computer up, I took out my 160GB HDD from it and shook it a bit to see if there was any sandy sounds. Sounded mint clean. The 250GB hdd fits inside my new pc, so I decided to plug it in anyway. But I decided to abort the process because this hard drive didn't sound like it functioned properly anymore. And even if it still does, somewhere down the line, it'll decide to fail on me. So I just decided to put the HDD back into it's original computer and stick with this 160GB HDD clogged with files until I get an answer about this sandy sound. Is this normal? I just don't wanna damage this new computer because this is the best computer I have so far.

Solution
Short of the HDD catching fire or something, plugging it in wont damage the computer. That being said, I wouldn't bother. If it sounds like there's stuff floating around in there now, it'll only get worse as time goes on. If you need more storage, a 1Tb can be had for $48.

Alright, so I know that you guys told me that it could be dead, but I tried it today or awhile ago and it seems to work pretty fine to be honest, all the files are read, it can write, isn't so noisy, and it works... fine I guess, it's only temporarily though, I'm currently planning on buying a 1TB western digital hdd for a good price in a few days, just temporarily for me to download my games and stuff, but thanks though, I won't use it forever, it could get worse

Just make sure nothing important is on the drive, or that you have backups of anything on that drive.

Yeah, nothing important on it, just some youtube videos, and the backup, but the backup ive already grabbed everything from it onto my main hdd, so its good
