I'm not sure if this is an issue - or am I just using my computer too much?

So my laptop is an amazing machine but every three months or so it gets really hot and slows down. I turn it off regularly, and I was sure that this wasn't viruses, or a certain program. I tried blowing compressed air into the vents, and it got better, but was still very laggy and had problems running properly.

So recently, i gave up on it, and decided to just give it into a store. I didn't use it for approximately two weeks, and now it's lightning fast , running games from 2015 just like it used to, but when it was lagging i had trouble playing vice city.

Is this an issue? Or am i just using my laptop too much? What should i do to remedy this, and is there a name for it that I can research and find out more about? I'm not sure if this is overheating....

You could run something like realtemp and msi afterburner for gpu temps, when you run a benchmark like heaven and aida64, and check on it regularly, and if you temps are under 95C, you are unlikely to be themal throttling on the cpu, and under 90C. If this is the case, you are likely to be overheating, if not, it could be another problem. If temperatures are a problem, if you have a bios you can attempt to undervolt your cpu with reducing voltage to decrease temperatures.

I have tried that before, and i think the highest temperature i got was 50 c, right now the highest temp i have is 66c after a week of not using my computer, but it's faster somehow o_O The vents are also hotter then ever, but still, lightning fast. Do you have any idea what the problem is? I was thinking of investing in a cooling fan.

What you need to do is run a stress test as well as the temperature programs, because you tested them at idle load. Try running the program with prime95 running in the background and look at the cpu temperatures when it is running, the higher the load the more heat produced. To test the graphics card run a program called unigine heaven benchmark and look a the temperatures while it runs in the background.

Here are all the tests. Do you think I should invest in a cooling fan, or are they a bad idea. I was looking at this one.

A bit unenlightened on the topic of cooling fans, just heard of them recently.

*Edit* I'm sorry, and i just looked at my original question and noted i wrote it shut down. It has never done this before, i don't know what i was thinking. Every three months or so it slows down, to a horrible crawl where even scrolling can take up to 30% cpu usage, and then go away once i leave the computer alone. Leaving it alone for a few nights would make it speedy for about 30 min before slowing down, and leaving it alone for 2 weeks as i did recently seems to have cured it entirely. I'm so sorry for the misdirection lool,

Btw, My laptop is an Elitebook 8540p, with a Nvidia NVS 5100m graphics card, and a i5 540m processor, 4 gb of ram.
