I just installed a HDD and when I tried to initialize it in Disk Management I got an I/O error. So I used disk part to check the details it displayed Read-Only: Yes. I tried turning off read only, cleaning and formatting neither of which worked. I am pretty much at a brick wall with this HDD. I cant turn off write protection, I cant wipe it. I've tried a lot of different 3rd party software to wipe it. Is there anything I can do at this point to access my drive?

This is a read out from disk part details of the drive:

DISKPART> detail disk

Welcome to the community, Klohver!

I'm really sorry to hear about your struggles with the WD HDD. :( These errors and formatting issues definitely sound concerning, so I'd recommend you run the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows. They will help us determine the health and SMART status of the hard drive. Sounds like the HDD is relatively new, so you should also check its warranty on our website.

If you haven't tried this already, you should also attempt connecting the drive with a different SATA cable and to a different SATA port on the motherboard. If you have access to another PC, you can also try how the HDD will be detected there.

Keep me posted & Good luck...

I have tried the WD utility and it says the HD is good but when I try to write 1's and 0's to the disk the utility crashes. (oops I broke it) I have not tried re-wiring them I will do that. On top of this problem I have 2 other WD 1TB HDD's 1 of them is currently running my OS no problem but the second one I am also having an issue is that it is only displaying that I have 128gb space on the 1TB drive. There is no jumper on the darned thing so Im really confused as to what is going on with these other 2 drives. I checked the warranty status on both of them and they both have just recently expired. I really don't know what to do, Ive run all the diagnostics I could find and everything tells me that they are good disks. :??:

Below are the 2 faulty HDD's and what they show in disk management:
The green one is the read-only one (Disk 1), and the black is the one showing only 128gb (Disk 2)

Unfortunately, I'm unable to see the screenshots, Klohver! I'd recommend you to upload them somewhere else (e.g. Imgur) and post the links here. You mentioned that you have tested the HDDs, but I'd still recommend you to swap the SATA cables and try connecting them to a different computer/system. If you have a SATA-to-USB cable (+ an adapter) or a docking station, you can also try troubleshooting them externally via USB.

Let me know how it goes.

no luck with the hard drives. I have no other pc to test them on and no funds to purchase new cables. :( I guess I found myself some new coasters for my coffee table.

This seems pretty unfortunate, Klohver!
I'd still consider contacting our customer support for assistance and possible troubleshooting solutions that you might be able to try by yourself. If you have a friend that is willing to lend you his PC just to test out the WD HDD and monitor its behavior there, that could potentially help us determine the source of the issue.

Keep me posted if you have more questions.
Best of luck!
