Setup:

  • ASRock Z77 Extrem4
    Drive 1 (C) 2x 80 Gig SSD – Raid 0 (Boot Drive)
    Drive 2 (D) 2x 2 Gig HDD – Raid 1 (SATA2)

History:

    Originally I upgraded Win7 to Win10
Later I acquired and installed 1x 480 Gig SSD (SATA3)
Used Acronis to clone C: to the new SSD

Problem:
I am able to boot when I set my Mobo to AHCI but it pulls apart my Drive 2 (Raid 1) and I'd like to keep my fault tolerance.
When I set to RAID it will crash to BSOD before log in
If I set controller back to AHCI it boots fine

Solution
at the boot of the BSOD it will have a STOP CODE 0x000000XX where the two X's are a number letter combo. Need those. Don't need what is in the ( ) though.

It's possible that your motherboard doesn't support AHCI over RAID mode, though that seems unlikely. Perhaps you just need to find where in the UEFI you can enable AHCI mode within RAID mode.

You can make a Windows registry tweak to enable/disable AHCI mode so you can boot still. This guide shows how to enable AHCI, but you can just do the opposite changes to disable it in Windows so it'll boot. However, given that you're using SSD's you really should run in AHCI mode or you'll ultimately be running much slower than just running a single SSD.

How would I mirror my other drives if I don't set me controller to raid?

I'm tempted to simply take my Raid 1 array apart and pull the one of the mirrors to an external bay and use Acronis instead for fault tolerance...abandoning RAID completely.
