a z97 cpu on a h97 mo bo

Solution
Any CPU listed as "for a Z97 board" will also work on an H97 board.

Again 'K' series CPUs will have the overclocking option on a Z97 board but won't on the H97. They'll definitely work at stock speeds though.

There is no such thing as a "Z97 CPU". There is the architecture of a CPU, and it's compatible chipset. I'm assuming you mean a 'K' CPU in the Haswell lineup (4690K, 4790K?) which are intended for use with a Z97 board to allow overclocking. Yes, those will work, but OCing potential is removed (or at least severely limited) by the H97 chipset.

H97 & Z97 (along with H87/Z87 and H81 with BIOS updates) will all accept Haswell / Haswell Refresh CPUs, although some may require BIOS updates.

The difference between those boards is that if you have K sku processor it can overclock on the z97 .
If you want to know if your cpu will run in your motherboard you check the cpu support list for your motherboard. It will be linked from the makers web page for the board

So I had my terminology. wrong........I guess I meant a z-97 or H97 _mother board_..... thanx for your answer. I don't plan to overclock, but most CPUs I've seen on line are for z97 mo bo's......

Motherboard have sockets

Z97 just means it is good for overclocking to make a long story short

H97 cannot overclock (correct me if i am wrong)

The motherboard have the same socket LGA 1150 which will fit an lGA 1150 CPU
