Its around an R7 240 or R7 250, which is a low end GPU you can get for 80 bucks or less these days.
So for a cheap gaming PC, do you think its best to buy an AMD A8-7670k, instead of paying 80 bucks for a GPU + buying a CPU?
If you are REALLY going cheap sure. At 720p this processor is fine. The advantage a discrete GPU will always have over it is dedicated memory vs using your system ram. But it will do the job if 720p is good for you.

For a cheap APU gaming PC, how much RAM would you recommend? How long until 8gb won't be enough?

8gb is fine, but you may benefit from more because of the shared memory with your APU. In your case sooner than later you want to get more.
