If I accidentally formatted a HDD and already have run a data recovery program, when recovering the data it says NOT to save the files to the drive that you lost.

If I do not have an extra drive large enough for all of the data is my only option going and buying a new HDD to save the files to or am I able to save them to the drive I recovered from? Will saving to the formatted drive I am recovering from mess up the recovery?

Thanks

You can either try to use dropbox with a paid subscription, and put it there until you figure something else, or use a portable hard drive that connects by USB.

How would the original drive that the files were placed in have not enough storage for the exact same files?

You should know when you perform restore from any media you couldn't save the data on same media or you risk to corrupt the data. If you cant find any ext HHD or other media to save the files consider this pick the most important files and save it on DVD`s it will take time to write the disk but is the cheapest solution (20 DVD 4.4 GB each = 88 GB for like 5 euro/7-8 $).
