I am sure I have a x8 PCI-e slot on my motherboard and I am using a GT 730 but I would to upgrade and I was told most gpus these days need a x16 slot but I don't have one so I am a bit confused if it will slot into my x8 or not can someone give me their opinion
Thanks

Solution

Install Gpuz. it will tell you if you have pcie3.0 or 2.0. If its pcie 3.0 x8 you're good with any gpu out there. If its 2.0 8x you might have some issues.

Do you at least know what model of computer you have? Did you buy it or did somebody build it for you?

Acer Aspire T3-710. It looks like it has a 16x PCI-E Slot(3.0 because it's Skylake) according to Acer's site. It's probably just the current card that only supports 8x (Geforce 730 doesn't really need the bandwidth). So you should be able to put pretty much any card that will physically fit in the case, but you'd also need to replace the power supply. If you don't want to do that the most powerful card that will definitely work is a Geforce 750 TI.

Yes also this is it I think
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/acer-t3-710-desktop-pc-10137774-pdt.html
But on CPU-Z it says:
Graphic Interface:
Version: PCI-Express
Link Width: x8
Max. Supported: x8

So I thought I had a x8 slot?
Because it says MAX SUPPORTED

I have a x8 2.0
It supports x8 PCI-Express v2.0
Currently using x8 PCI-Express v1.1

That could be an issue. What are you looking to upgrade to? That slot might limit a high end card, but if youre only going up to a 750 ti for example you'll probably be fine

Well I might only upgrade to 750 TI but is that the limit?

I'm not sure. you'll have to google to see if there are any articles that test modern cards on pcie 2.0 8x bandwidth. There are plenty that show that difference between pcie 3.0 16x and 8 x (none at all), but i dont recall seeing any test with a pcie 2.0 8x slot and modern cards. You'll have to consult the google machine on this one.
