I did RMA . but also planning to buy a new gtx 980. but there are so many version out for Evga brand and msi brands. can any one explain the difference between these versions? e.g classified, kingping edition , ftw, acx/sc , acx, hydro copper, hybrid? which one i should go for. budget is not an issue

thing is you got I assume a nice gtx 780 so why not hang on and see what pascal brings to the table ? not to say its going to be any better but time will tell on that and then you may see a slight price drop or more sales to help move out the 900 cards to make room for the Pascal's

I honestly dont see where your hurting with that 780 to rush in to a 980 at 500+ $$$ is that going to give 500 bucks worth of upgrade ??

Kingpin is enthusiast level. For those who want to push your GPU to the max.

Classified and FTW versions are the higher tier.

SSC or SC+ is also high tier.

SC is standard.

Check out the GPU Manufacturer's Tier list, click on the bottom right of this reply. Scroll down to GTX 980.

The 980 isn't really worth the cost unless you are pushing 1440p. Even then, r9 390 is the better deal. The top tier 980's are still considerably below the 980ti power range, but not that far above top tier 970s.

If you are after 980 performance, you are going to pay a premium.

thing is the 980 is a true NVidia card the 970 is not

If you've already worked your way though our GTX 980 review, then you'll know that unlike that card, Nvidia is not producing a reference model of the GTX 970, the second enthusiast-grade Maxwell part that replaces the GTX 770 in the product stack. The images on this page do not reflect a ready to buy product. Instead, Nvidia's AICs will be able to purchase the GPU and memory chips, but after that it's up to them, and this will undoubtedly lead to a high degree of variability when it comes to PCB and cooler design as well as factory overclocks. Furthermore, as we mentioned in our GTX 980 review, GTX 970 has been a pure virtual (no reference card) launch, which means all of NVIDIA’s partners are launching their custom cards right out of the gate. A lot of these have been recycled or otherwise only slightly modified GTX 700/600 series designs, owing to the fact that GM204’s memory bus has been held at 256-bits and its power requirements are so low.

That was original launch of the 970 by a few partners, mainly the low end off brand. Asus, Evga, msi, Galax, Gigabyte all have custom pcbs and coolers. The 970 and 980 are the same except for the lowered memory, clocks etc, but otherwise are the same card. And the 970 isn't a replacement for the 770 as it competes with both the 780 and 780ti, depending on the game. The gtx960 would be closer to the 770 in performance.

Good point on the pascals. And considering a Evga 980 kingpin is $630, and there's currently 7 different 980ti's for less on pcpartpicker.com, a gtx980 is fast becoming a rather non-viable gpu as it's price/performance ratio is so far out of whack. Drop it down closer to $400, with top end cards like the kingpin closer to $500, and it might be salvageable. With 980ti's at just over $600 and 970's at just over $300, spending $500+ for a card that doesn't compete with a 980ti, and barely beats a 970 is kinda pointless.
