Not able to boot into Windows 7. Displays A disk read error occurred. Press ctrl+alt+delete to restart” problem. When those keys are hit, it continues to say Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot drive. I was able to get into F12 and run Computer Diagnostic. Showed a hard drive issue, error code 2000-0151 issue.

Assistance would be most appreciated.

Hey there, gtrainer.

Basically, it sounds like your drive might be in a pretty bad situation. If you have data which you need to recover, I'd recommend that you try it with a different computer, either externally (via a SATA to USB adapter, external enclosure, or a docking station) or internally, to see if the drive is recognized. If you're still having issues, you could try it with Ubuntu Live USB/DVD, to see if you're able access the files and recover them. Another option would be data recovery software: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html & http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm
On the other hand, if you don't need any of the data, you could still connect it...

On the other hand, if you don't need any of the data, you could still connect it to a different computer and try running some tests on it with an HDD/SSD diagnostic tool if it's recognized, to see what's the situation.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

Hi Boogieman,

Just wanted to thank you for your reply. Going to most likely replace the hard drive and definitely want to recover the data. That is the part that will be totally new to me so will give it a go.

I actually got a hold of the computer today. Tried a Sabrent SATA hard drive adapter but had a faulty power hookup or cable and I'm returning it. Wanted to know if one was better than the other, that is should I just try another hard drive adapter or might it be a bit "reliable" to use an external enclosure? Appreciate any input on this matter.

Thanks again.

Unfortunately as an official WD rep, I can't really recommend anything in particular which is not under the WD brand. As far as SATA to USB adapters and external enclosures go, there's not really much to look for besides drive size compatibility (basically there are not many problems related to that part, but once in while something like this pops-up) and good user reviews.

Please let me know if anything else comes up.

The corrupted HDD drive is recognized in File Manager and Disk Management when I hook it up with a USB SATA Converter to my working Windows 7 system. Today I tried some good recovery software and was not able to display the drives in any program, gets hung up in every program when it tries to scan for drives. So recovery software is out.

I would like to try your Ubuntu Live USB/DVD solution, to see if you're able access the files and recover them. It was also suggested I try Linux ddrescue to make a sector level clone image copy of the failing drive onto a known good drive. Sounds good but I have no clear instructions on how to do either function. Do you know where they give clear instructions on how to try your Ubuntu Live solution to recover my files?

Your input would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

My recommendation was just to see if the drive is properly recognized by using this OS and if you can copy the data from it. Here's how to create a bootable flash drive with Ubuntu Live: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows and here's where to download the Ubuntu from: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop. Once you are ready with the bootable flash drive and have Ubuntu on it, just connect it to your computer, restart and change the boot priority from your BIOS so that the flash drive is the 1st choice, then save & exit. After that the computer should boot to Ubuntu and you can see if you can open the drive and recover the data.
