First AIO Water Cooled Set-up - a quick question...

Hi all

I've got a Gigabyte Z97X-SLI motherboard with an I5 4670k - I have just installed a corsair h75 and it seems to be working correctly. The fans are plugged into the normal pwm controlled fan header and the pump into the CPU-OPT three pin header (which is apparently specifically for water pumps.)

I've managed to OC to 4.2 ghz with 1.22v and temps go to max 85 degrees when under stress with AIDA64. However, the temperature seems to fluctuate massively over a short period (between 70 and 84 degrees) and the fans seem to speed up and slow down in an almost cyclical way over a few seconds. Is this normal for an AIO cooler like this? I'd assume that as the load on the cpu increases the fan would speed up in a normal ramp (as it was with my previous Zalman air cooler).

Any guidance will be gratefully received.

Chris

Oh heck. You can't do that. You *have* to clean off old thermal paste. It's a one-time thing.

Now you will have to get a cleaning solution (arctic silver sells a very good 2-stage cleaner) and also fresh paste for afterwards.

Temps are 35 degrees idle, up to 70 degrees gaming on a cpu intensive game like AC Syndicate.

It's rather strange as the fans are now normal and ramp up as expected under load, but the cpu temps will jump from 70 degrees average to 85 degrees and back down when stress testing.

When I installed the new water cooler I didn't clean the existing thermal paste off the cpu - could this affect it? The heat sink on the h75 had thermal paste pre-applied.....

Thanks Karsten. I thought that might be the case. I'm guessing incorrectly applied paste could cause those fluctuations in temperatures.

Just ordered some arctic silver 5 and the 2 stage cleaner off Amazon.

Cheers again
