Where I work, we have recently been experiencing problems with HP 8000 Elite Desktops having the SATA Power connector shorting out. (At least 3 this month).
On 2, it was an un-used connector at the end of cable just "dangling" loose. (Nothing connected)
On 1, it was the middle connector plugged into the DVD drive.
they had been reported to us as "Smoking Computers" and the users turned them off.
All of them showed a similar melted part on the connection between the yellow (+12V) and black (GND) wires.
On the 2, there was no power load (or at least shouldn't be any).
On the 1 with the DVD, the drive was not in use.
The power cable is modular and it comes from the Mobo, not PSU. My suggestion was to just remove the cable. In reality, our users RARELY need the DVD. If they need to install software, a tech does it from network or USB device. Management didn't like that though.
These are 4 year old machines and beyond the warranty. We are getting some assistance from HP.
Has any one encountered a similar issue? (Unconnected cables melting with no apparent reason?)
Thank you
