i have intel core i5 2400 processor along with gigabyte z77-d3h motherboard. my processor only has 16 pcie lanes. i am running gtx 970 on those lanes. recently my ethernet port has been damaged. i dont have any warrenty for this motherboard left. i was thinking of using a ethernet card. but now i am conflicted because if i use a pcie card, then my graphics card wont get enough lanes to work efficiently. i heard that there are also pci cards. but i dont know if they will use pcie lanes. i could not find any helpful tips on this part. can someone point out the solution to my problem?

According to the motherboard manual you could:

Use the PCI slots independently of the PCIe slots.
Use the topmost PCIe x1 slot with no penalties.
Use either of the bottom PCIe x1 slots but lose the second PCIe x16 slot (which is really an x4).
Use the second PCIe x16 slot (really x4) but lose the two bottom PCIe x1 slots.

does the pci slots not use any lanes from the 16x pcie slot? also are the last two white slots in my mother board pci slots?

Yes, those white slots are PCI slots. The easiest way to distinguish PCIe x16 from PCI slots is the little notch in the slot. And yes, the PCI slots don't use PCIe lanes. If you download your motherboard's manual from Gigabyte's website you'll find a diagram detailing how everything is connected on the board.
