I'm upgrading my hard drive and would like to know if there's anything special I should do the the old drive before I take it out of the laptop. I plan on saving it as a backup in the event the new drive poops out. Does removing the drive erase existing data on it or should I clean it up before removal?

Hello... Typically if you want to have a "clean drive" again, Delete all the Partitions with a DOS level APP, and not in Windows.
But by just removing a typical HD... it WILL still have all the Magnetic DATA on the Platters, for years and IS a typical Backup method used.

Thank you much! That's the info I needed. I don't really want a bare drive, just one that's not cluttered up with junk if I ever need to use it again.

Thanks mjslakeridge! I will selectively clean up the old drive before removing it and replacing it with the new one. I did actually consider SSD but this is a used computer that was bought mainly so that I could install Linux as the primary OS and play around with that. I already ordered 2 new new memory modules and a 1T hard drive just to boost the performance. Cost was a factor in the decision to not go with SSD.
