Best AMD chip?

So I have an FX-8320 at the moment and I am awaiting my oculus rift yet it falls below the recommended specs for cpu. Some forums say the chip will be fine, others say the 8-cores might prove too weak. Looking for opinions on this and is there a more powerful AMD cpu out there suited to gaming? (I am not interested in being told to switch to Intel, mobo is a new gaming amd one that did not come cheap)

This has been recommended to me:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/amd-piledriver-fx-8-eight-core-9590-blk-ed-4.70ghz-5.00ghz-turbo-socket-am3-processor-oem-cp-360-am.html

Well there isn't much faster than the 8320 other than a 8350 and the 8320 can OC to that speed. The 9xxx series chips are very hot and only work on a couple of motherboards and need massive cooling.

So really, there isn't a big upgrade path to go to, and Intel would be the best bet.

Why not wait till you get your Rift, then try it and see for yourself on how it runs, then decide on your plan of action rather than forum speculation.

It will come down to how well the Rift works with AMD's style of CPU architecture and if it's more core/thread dependant than speed. If clock speed doesn't play a huge role, than a new AMD won't matter.

So nothing to panic about just now?

Yeah for AMD the 8320 is pretty much it. The 9590 is essentially just a heavily overclocked 8320, in my opinion it would absolutely not be worth upgrading to one of those just overclock the 8320 if you can. Whether or not a 8320 will be enough for VR is going to depend on the game in question im sure in some games it will be plenty powerful enough in others maybe not. If you want a more powerful cpu intel is the way to go, if you want to stick to AMD I would wait to see what zen offers.

Only issue is I've just forked out for a 990FXA gaming amd board...would switch to intel but cannot afford a new mobo on top

Exactly. Upgrading for a game that hasn't been released never made sense to me. Oftentimes they'll run well enough regardless what the recommended specs are.

Well then your in the same boat im in. Not much room to grow on the AM3+ platform unfortunately. That said for 4 year old cpu's the fx line still holds its own.

Well you could try overclocking your cpu to get at least 8350 speeds and with a good board and cooler 9370 speeds are possible if not a straight up 4.6Ghz - 4.8Ghz after that you have to crank the voltage and the heat/temps and power usage get insane for 24/7 usage. So try that and then if need be get a decent Intel system (at least an modern i5 of either Haswell, Broadwell, or Skylake). Also Broadwell-E will be out around July and Kaby Lake as well. Zen is looking like a November to late December release IMO.
