Running Xubuntu 14.0 LTS. Sytem is Biostar H77MU3 with Intel G540. The boot disk is a repourposed HDD from an ASUS netbook. I have been getting numerous crashes followed by stuck boot. So far I have been able to resolve the problem by unplugging the HDD and reconnecting it to a different SATA port but this has happened repeatedly. The connection to the 6 Gb/s ports seem to no longer work.

This just happened again it attempts to boot, I get the Xubuntu screen, but instead of booting it attempts a disk scan and gives "drive /tmp not ready"

Any ideas what this could be? Is this a HDD failure or a MB failure? I am tempted to replace both.

so what does your boards manual say that ''A3'' means ??? is it some error code ?? I looked at your boards online manual and got to say its sad

http://www.manualslib.com/manual/444184/Biostar-H77mu3.html?page=2#manual

thing is you say it was fine for 2 years so maybe the drive is failing just may be a instant thing that now just pops up ?? I guess get another drive install another Linux on it and see how it behaves

I had drives pass smart but still were failing drives [drives that show smart pass but fail short or long test ??] go figure on how that works .

looks like replace the drive and fingers crossed maybe ?
laptop drive on a desk top ?/ maybe a power issue ? firmware of the drive not meant to be use on desktop ? or just a bad or failing drive ?

then was Linux a clean install on the desktop or was it transferred over from a laptop to the desktop ? [maybe boot manager is getting confused ?

looking quick maybe some knind of bugg/

Thanks for the responses and queries. Yes, it was clean install, and the system worked fine for a year or two. The problems have been cropping up in the last 3-4 months. I have switched SATA cables and that seems to help get it running again but then the failure recurs. I suspect the HDD too, but once the system is running, SMART data checks out healthy.

The system also has a separate data drive that seems to work fine.

I will try the fixes in the Ubuntu forums to see if I can get it to boot, then report back.

Just to update this thread, I did not do any of the command line fixes. I tried what I have been doing, which is unplug the boot drive and plug it in to a different port. Once again, the machine fired up and now boots normally. I am guessing it will work normally for a couple weeks and then happen again.

I should have added that every time this has happened, it was preceded by a hard crash. The most recent time, it was also booting much slower than normal. On the initial BIOS screen, it would stall for about 8-10 seconds with an "A3" code on the bottom, but then it would detect the HDD and boot. Then the hard crash, and then it would only get to the XUbuntu screen with "drive /tmp not ready" error.

Any ideas what this could be? Must have something to do with the connection between the HDD and the motherboard, but which one?
