With these components:
i7 6700k
gigabyte z170x gaming 7
carbide 500r

Should I go with the arctic liquid freezer 120? Or the 240 is compatible with the slots on the top of the 500r?

Solution
You don't need liquid cooling for that combination of parts, a good air cooler would be enough.

With all the fans on, the 240mm radiator will be too thick to clear the DIMM slots on your motherboard. You may be able to do something tricky, like mounting the radiator and the push fans inside the case, and mounting the pull fans on the outside of the case under the top cover, but I'm not sure of the exact measurements or interference with components on that particular motherboard.

Although both radiators will fit in the case, your concerns will be with interference with components and accessories on the motherboard where the two intersect.

I don't know the case well, so i cant say much for compatibility... but i do own the arctic freezer liquid 120, and i can say it is the best 120mm AIO. the cooling is comparable to a 240mm AIO. keeps my AMD FX 8350 @ 4.7 with (1.45v) about 15 degrees Celsius below the thermal margin (as measured in AMD overdrive) during prime95.
noise levels are ok at full load... but while gaming and typical workloads its not audible.
the only problem with it is that its very thick (49mm radiator), and because of that you are forced to use it in push pull.
then again, if your rear fan can hold a 120mm fan, you should be able to mount it with no problems.
best of luck to you friend.
D.
Edit: after looking at the corsair website i see in the pictures that they installed a rear 120mm AIO in push pull, so it shouldn't be a problem to install the freezer 120.
