cable select is easier. this must be an old pc if you're working with ide drives.
if both are on the same ribbon cable, then they should both be on cable select OR one is master, the other slave. again cable select is easier so you don't have to worry about any conflicts.
2 different cables and they can both be master OR again both set to cable select works fine too.
