Hi guys, I'm new to pc builds and would like some advice. I have GIGABYTE H170M-D3H micro ATX motherboard and an INTEL(R) CORE(TM) I5-6600 PROCESSOR. I'm wondering if I can hold off on a graphics card until I have enough money and whether I'll be able to use the PC for basic functions until I get one?

Hello fieldsc,

Yes you can because your CPU will have on-board graphics except those graphics will be not suitable for gaming, for office/Internet browsing use its absolutely fine but for a gaming build...no way. When you boot your PC for the first time make sure you have a VGA cable plugged into the motherboard display port, this way the display will show up but bear in mind when you get a dedicated GPU the motherboard VGA port won't work and you'll have to plug it into the GPU port instead

I learnt that the hard way with my rig lol

No problem at all friend :)

Make sure you save up for something fancy for a GPU, Nvidia are working on Pascal GPU's so your best bet is to wait for those or settle with a good ol' 960, that's what I've got and it definitely packs a punch :)

Happy computing! :)

I was thinking along the lines of this GPU:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-R9-380-Gaming-Graphics/dp/B00ZPOBI0M

Do you think it would be a good GPU to start with? I'm also not sure whether it will fit into the motherboard in question. I believe it requires an 8 pin and a 6 pin. I think it should be compatible but would like to make sure before dropping all this money on it!

Cheers

That's a good place to start I think, judging by benchmarks you should be able to run any new game on at least medium or even high depending on the game.

Its not about if it will fit in the motherboard, its a case of if you have the cables for it, looking at the card it needs two 6 pins so for that you will need two PCI'e cables (Judging from my HX850i PSU) which should have come with your PSU but if not you can always look on Amazon because they'll always have what you need no doubt :)
