First lets say I go for Windows to go installation on my ext-HDD (which will be supporting UEFI).
Now how to setup linux, say Ubuntu in persistent mode as dualboot on the same disk?
or vice-versa
so that at the end the hdd will act as my portable workspace for windows as well as linux.

Also if possible, it will be benefitial to have legacy mode in addition (like by using Syslinux for Ubuntu).

What ex_bubblehead told you is correct, Windows won't work on a different motherboard other than the one it was installed on. A solution is to install Windows as a Virtual Machine and save it on the external hard disk, and whenever you need it, you just use a virtualization software such as VirtualBox to open the virtual machine file.

guys its possible with 'Windows on the go' feature available in enterprise editions for W8.1 and W10.

At present I have already installed it on my ext. HDD and checked it on 3 computers(incl. intel and AMD chipsets). Its working all good. Only thing is that for first time connecting any new system it takes extra time(which is obvious) showing the 'Getting Ready' thing.

Now on my disk(MBR formatted): first partition is FAT32 for the bootloader, second is NTFS for Windows installed files, third is the remaining as unallocated.
All I need is solution of how to proceed with linux(ubuntu) installation in persistent mode alongside this installed windows under UEFI.

The pc alloted to me at my organisation has enterprise edition installed. And believe me I know more than the IT guy here.
So please let's focus back on the main topic.

Easy way is to just have syslinux boot ubuntu in live mode with casper-rw. Or specialized 'frugal' distribution like slax, porteus, alphaos, puppylinux.. That are designed to be portable and run off a USB. Don't know anything about windows except that because of driver issues it is not very portable.

i already tried: "... syslinux boot ubuntu in live mode with casper-rw..." but before installing windows. And later while installing windows there was no primary partition(only extended partitions). Any details on how to manage partitions ( MBR disk) for both windows and linux will be helpful.

i will try this "...specialized 'frugal' distribution like slax, porteus, alphaos, puppylinux...". Didn't know about. Thanks.

FYI: I agree with you on "...about windows except that because of driver issues it is not very portable..." What i have experienced and read about 'Windows on the go' is that its just for corporate work and not a portable workstation for running high end applications that would run better if utilizing full hardware.

I am sorry for the misunderstanding. I didn't mean that I haven't seek the IT guy's assistance. He is a good friend of mine, however his knowledge is very specific to the job and is limited for these kind of stuff.
