My Dell laptop browsers won't load any internet pages properly which is why I am trying to get your help.

OS: Windows XP sp2
Browsers: Firefox and an old IE
Security: Norton Anti virus
Internet connectivity: broadband working fine, confirmed by my ISP.

Last worked properly: 28th March 16.
Emails: Outlook Express works although incoming messages won't show graphics and links don't load on to web pages when clicked.

Appearance of web pages: blank page with Connecting ... message in top bar

Variations: can do a google search but it takes time to load and then none of the links from the results will load. Youtube tutorial pages will load but not some of the graphics and the videos do not play.

I've tried turning off some of the Norton protection but no difference. I tried making the mozilla connection 'no proxy' (was auto-detect) but no difference.

Until I can access another computer via a friend or library, I am restricted in my reading of any response on this forum to half-hour lunch periods but would be happy to receive email advice.

Solution
A few days later, my Outlook express stopped sending emails although it would still receive them. So with this extra problem, I phoned my ISP again, this time about both (1) the emails and (2) the continuing browser problem. Both are now fixed but I cannot fully explain the solution. (1) For the emails, I gave them remote access and they went into settings and on the outgoing server they put in one of their own and took out the gmail one: so then emails in/out worked normally. (2) For the browser not loading pages problem, the ISP gave me the IP address of a well known company and when I tapped it in to the address bar the website loaded fully straightaway. Then they gave me the IP address of my own Technicolor router and that website...

Thanks for the suggestion Phillip, you gave me ideas but ... I still have a problem, Everyone.
(1) I already had the ethernet cable connected so that did not seem to be the answer. So I did the opposite of Philip's suggestion and disconnected it and relied on the WiFi. There was a slight improvement. because 2 short Youtube videos that I's been trying to get suddenty played. They were ones that suggested solutions but it tirned out that they applied to later versions of Windows and did not help me much. Another longer video kept cutting off just over the 6 minute mark. I tried the 'cmd' diagnotics and was able to successfully ping google and yahoo websites with zero loss of packets. 8.8.8.8. mostly did the same but one time 25% was returned. I noticed that the WiFi intermittently cut out several times over an hour or so.I don't know if this means there is a problem with the router,
(2) I took the laptop into a computer shop to see what they could quickly discover. They connected to their WiFi but - just the same as with my home connection - no pages would download, so that suggests a problem with the computer itself - hardware or software. I have the option of taking it back to them and leaving it there - if I still cannot sort this myself.
(3) Email on Outlook Express still works but still not the links to the Firefox or IE browsers..
I'd welcome more ideas. I am posting this via an internet cafe terminal.
I hope to come back here or check for ,ore ideas via friends over the next few days.
I have limited knowledge and understanding but can usually follow logically put instructions.
Thanks for your attention.
David

Then they gave me the IP address of my own Technicolor router and that website came up too. The ISP contact said therefore I might have a problem with DNS settings for my router and they would read the router manual; they also thought my problems might have been caused somehow by other software. Later the same day my browser started working normally so the ISP must have done something from their end (don't know what). It is now a few days later and everything seems to be working fine.
