Hey, I recently bought the HP 15-d002tx laptop with GT 820M GPU and I am facing a major issue. I like to play games like Far Cry 3 and Hitman Absolution. Now for the main problem :-

I start my game with power plugged in and Hitman (With 1024x768 Low settings) touches about 15 FPS hardly (Poorest Performance). In fact, when I run it from the Integrated HD 4000, it touches about 20-22 FPS.

But when I start the game without Power Plugged in (On the GPU, not Integrated), my GPU offers about 26 FPS and just after connecting Power, I see about 55 FPS (Just what it is expected). But after 10 seconds or such, FPS keeps lowering down and again touches 15 FPS even with Power.

Please HELP me get out of this situation, I am feeling like I wasted my money. And do note that, I have the latest drivers of the GPU and Integrated GPU.

I will be very grateful to you guys if you help me !!

Update :- Though I picked the best solution, my problem isn't totally solved yet, By the answers, I learned that Heating is the SPOILER here. At idle, my GPU is around 45 C which, in my opinion is not good. But my GPU hovers around 70 C while gaming which is quite safe. But I noticed that whenever the GPU reaches 70 C, my GPU slows itself. And I am sure that the GPU Boost 2.0 technology is doing this. Anyway I can remove this temperature targeting?

Solution
Not sure why that is an issue, the 820M is a low power video card so what you bought is what performance you get. It may have spikes of good FPS in areas but when the game gets going with loading things, it will slow down. Plus heat may be an issue, it may be dropping speed to protect the hardware.

If you are playing Far Cry 3 at Medium settings at 720p, about 30fps is the top you can expect from your laptop. Your issue may also be "latest" drivers unless you got them from the laptop vendor and not nVidia. The video drivers are only fully supported by the laptop vendor, it works differently than a desktop video card.

A laptop for gaming is one with a 960m, 940m at the lowest if you are ok with low settings. A 920m is basically...

Try reinstalling your drivers and make sure they are up to date. Your card also may be underclocking and not boosting up during games. Go into the Nvidia control panel and go to manage 3d settings and for power management mode put it on prefer maximum performance.

Temps don't really have much effect on this specific GPU, its designed to run hot, I touch 94 degrees while gaming but never get a significantly lower framerate. I do lose about 5 FPS, but never gone to the 'unplayable' state. I can run GTA V easily at 1366x768, high settings at around 40 FPS@90 degrees. Just clear background apps before playing. Also, mods have caused this issue for me too, so I'd really not mes up the game using mods.
