PC Spec- CPU i5 3570k, Graphics- GTX 970, OS- Windows 10, PSU- corsair tx650, Storage- 120 GB SSD, 1 terabyte 7200RPm, Corsair Carbide Series 400R Mid‑Tower Case,
RAM 8 gb of DDR3
(I only play games on this PC)

Should I upgrade to DDR4 and will I notice a difference? And Should I go to 16 gb of RAM or stay at 8 gb

Solution
To run DD4 you would need new CPU and mobo, so not worth it unless contemplating a new rig (and the expenses). With a 3570K could go more DRAM and quite possibly faster, with an OC the 3570K can normally run 2133 sticks and some can go 2400 or higher. Depending on the games you play 16GB might improve the overall experience

As said, it 'depends on the game', some already call for 16GB, and with many others having more DRAM improves the average FPS and it can eliminate the need/use of a Page file, which can 'improve the overall experience' ;)

You show me a game that needs more than 8 gigs of system ram. Don't do that some games thing. Name the games and post screenshots.

PS: dont list system requirements on the box. I mean show me a screen shot of afterburner or video with the system using more than 8 gigs. I play on 1440p with a 980ti, i usually gave youtube going, a bunch of monitoring software, skype sometimes and the most i've EVER seen is just under 6 gigs. Usually its high 4s or low 5s

Yes I know a bit about gaming and RAM and have helped a few thousand members right here in these forums. I also well remember over the years hearing that no game will EVER need more than 2 GB and then 4GB and many saying 8GB now and in the past. But since you have spoken, I guess we should ignore all those people that have commented that increasing their DRAM above 8GB has shown improvement in their gaming experiences? And of course we shouldn't look to the future at all?

Just wondering, are you also a proponent of the myth that faster DRAM doesn't increase performance or the gaming experience also?

Blah, blah, blah, show me where he needs over 8 gigs now or in the near future. At no point did I say a system wont EVER need more than 8 gigs. Copy the part of my post where I said, hinted ,or otherwise implied such. I don't give a damn how many you've helped before, you're giving him the wrong info now.

Op. Listen, go buy more ram and report back if it helps you even the slightest. I'm easy to please. If it gives you even 1 fps higher than what you were getting with 8 gigs i'll shut up.

Just quickly, I have to agree on the blah, blah, blah. Either you aren't reading what is being said, or you can't comprehend.

From the beginning I stated "Depending on the games you play 16GB might improve the overall experience", and pointed out briefly on average FPS, cutting on page file use, etc. If you want to take things out of context to fit whatever you think, that's up to you. Additionally I never said a single word about YOU saying a system will never need more than 8GB, that again is YOU twisting the words to fit your perceptions, I simply pointed out additional myths about DRAM, same as I did in the bit about speed not factoring in. No one said anything about it increasing your FPS either, I did point out Average FPS. There are lots of FAQs and Fiction about DRAM that people don't know, I addressed many of them here:

You're not understanding. I am saying that there is no game on this earth or any other alternate earth that will benefit anybody, (you, me, the op, obama or anybody else) from having more than 8 gigs or ram. There is no "depending on the game" there is NO GAME. You keep saying that , but you have yet to show ANY game that benefits from having more than 8 gigs as opposed to 8 gigs. Show me the the game. It's that simple. You're a mod you got access to lots of the old pages, there must be an article somewhere on this site that backs up what you're saying.

I'll try a different approach, have you ever been playing a game and it has to go to the page file - if so which would be faster - the system going to the drive to retrieve data from the page file and reloading it - or simply just having it there in DRAM?

No...No I haven't and neither has anybody else with 8 gigs of playing modern games

I have 64 gigs but I use afterburner and I set it to monitor my system RAM as well as all the GPU stuff. It's never got close to 8 gig of system RAM usage. This is with steam running corsair software for my k95 running, Logitech running for my Logitech mouse and gameboard running, YouTube open in chrome a few other chroe taba open. Skype open so my family can im me. With all that and other system resources going it still only gets to the mid 5 gig level

Sorry, your sig shows 16GB, my mistake ;) still with a healthy amount of DRAM as you have you should seldom to never see the page file thrashing as many do with only 8GB
