Why can I not get sound to work with Realtek HD audio?

I have a msi gaming motherboard and the built in sound card uses realtek audio. I am trying to connect a digital optical cable to my Yamaha 7.1 channel receiver, but nothing is working. I have set Realtek as my default in settings like most sites say to do. I had the cable connected to the first optical connection on my A/V receiver but it started to flash words on the display of the receiver, or more like glitch between the standard and straight mode, and the only sound was static. Now I have it on the second connection and the flashing has stopped but still there is no sound. I do not know how to fix this. My monitor does not have an optical connection or a second HDMI. I have a second HDMI on my pc but not a cable long enough to reach to my receiver. (I have a 15ft cable and that is not enough) I don't want to use headphones because they are uncomfortable for any great length of gaming, and the sound is not as good. Any ideas on how to fix this? Is it the a/v receiver or my sound card? And I have no sound, for anything.

Solution
I'm using similar setup with an old model RX-V371 Yamaha AVR.

1. You need to make sure the audio driver you install is specifically Realtek's HD Audio one

2. Make sure the optical cable you're using is a good one in working order, cheap ones are often crap

3. Pay attention and jot down what the LCD readout is saying, and post it. That is vital information

Thanks. But it is working now though I think it's the connection on my computer that is the problem. I restarted the computer and it started to work randomly. My mouse will do something similar, and will have power but won't work unless I restart the computer. The HDMIs don't even work on the motherboard but they do work on my Nvidia. I don't know what to do about that aside from replacing the motherboard... which is something I'm not very eager to do. My mouse is a good one, so I know it's not the problem.

It is properly mounted, I think the metal is steel, or that's what it said on the box. I have updated recently too. For now I will deal with it, since it works most of the time and all I have to do is restart it to fix the problem. If it gets worse then I'll do something about it

If rebooting only fixes it temporarily, it could be a corrupt Master Boot Record, or other system files. You might also check for bad drive sectors, or try clearing the CMOS, in the case of a corrupt BIOS.

I assume you've scanned for malware just in case too?
