Confusion over 6/8 pin connector?

The current GPU I'm looking to get is the:

MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING 4G

In the specifications for what power connector it needs, it says 6 pin/ 8 pin
Does this mean it needs both a 6 and 8 pin connector to run? If so will I need to look for a PSU with a 6 and 8 pin connector?

I'm just a bit confused about the whole thing.:??:

I own the card , this is plenty to run it.

I looked at some pictures of it as well as on a few websites and it does seem to have both an eight pin and a six pin connector. A 6+2 pin connector will work with either slot, so yes you will need to find a power supply that can supply both an eight pin and a six pin. This can either be in the form of two 6+2 pin connectors, one 8 pin and one 6+2, one six and one 6+2, or one six and one eight.

I would recommend a 600 watt or above PSU just in case you want to squeeze some more performance out of your card later on.

[strike]it should only be a single 8 pin connector for the card. a 970 does not use enough power for both a 6 pin and an 8 pin. that's 300w power available to it which is crazy for a 970.

not sure why it is saying both but the msi site only says an 8 pin connector which is what i expected to find[/strike]

edit: here is a youtube video opening the box https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9gyGebHdLY (about 5:15 min in shows the connections) and sure enough it has both connections on it. no clue why but i guess it needs both so i stand corrected. did not expect that from a 970 gpu.

WOW looked up a couple of reviews for it and with some extra oc on it, it hit close to 280w. that's like 980 range

i'm speechless but i guess a custom pcb and everything else yields some super power usage. learned something new today......

So in a earlier thread I posted about what PSU I would need for my current build:http://

a 550 Watt PSU will still be sufficient for it?
