I had windows 8. One day by mistake I deleted the system files. So I formatted the whole system and tried to reinstall windows 8 from windows recovery disc ( 4 of them) But I could not. I have the product key. Can you help me how to do it.

You cannot install from recovery disks. You can recover existing installations from recovery disks or you can recover from recovery partitions, if one exists on the drive, from recovery disks, but you cannot do a clean install.

You don't want to use those anyhow as they will contain all the same junk and bloatware that came on the system when it was purchased. Just do a clean install and avoid the crapware that comes on the recovery disks.
ISO is a disk image that contains all the installation files. Same as when you purchase the disk originally. The media creation tool will give you the option to create installation media on DVD or USB, and you can install from whichever method you prefer.

Thank you. I may try that. But can you tell me if I can do something with my existing recovery discs themselves and can do installation from them. Because I am not clear how to do it. I have a vaio laptop with 64 bit. windows 8 was inbuilt when I bought the laptop. I have the recovery discs (4 DVDs)

Hi

you did not give model of sony laptop so can not give exact proceedure

you will find it at Sony website

this is example for one model it assumes you have not erased the hidden recovery partition
https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/pcs-accessories/restoring-to-factory-setting-without-cd/td-p/297078

You can only download retail Windows from Microsoft nowdays not OEM versions
(eg if your key is from OEM Windows 8 you cant download from Microsoft)
note Key for 8 and 8.1 differ

I am not sure why your recovery disks dont work.
Could be corrupt or you are not putting the boot disk in first or laptop is set to boot from hard disk first.

I know Toshiba & Dell recovery disks are designed to recover to as delivered state in situation when hard disk has died so recovery partition is not available
