Hi everybody,

I've got an external hard drive (WD Red) connected to an Asus N18U router via USB3.0. I would like to monitor its health status through HDSentinel but the drive doesn't appear in "Open status of offline disk(s)" menu. Do you know any solution for this matter? If there's no "cure" for my problem, what's the easiest way to check the status of this hard drive?

Thanks for the answers!

SMART data generally cannot be read over USB (seems about 50-50 on whether it works on a given enclosure), and certainly not via network shares.

You would need to connect the drive, ideally via SATA, to a machine that either has built-in SMART tools, or you can install software on. This is probably not going to be a router.

PS: Remember that SMART does not always give advance notice of HDD failure, and you should ALWAYS have at least one backup of important data, preferably with one offsite too.

It was working before I made a clean install of Windows 10. The external drive appeared in the offline status menu and I could add it to the main screen.

Welcome, jolti05!

I'd second what @Someone Somewhere mentioned and advise you to always backup your files and make sure you have at least two copies of it stored in different storage devices/locations. This is the best way to prevent any potential data loss.
You won't be able to checkup on the SMART attributes of the HDD while it's connected to the router. However, you should be able to test it, once you plug it to the computer.
I'd also recommend you to use WD's brand-specific Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows. Running the QUICK and EXTENDED tests will provide you with details about the SMART results and health status.

Hope this helps. Good luck! :)

I have to admit I've started to think that I was wrong and saw a previous state of the drive... I took the advice and made some backup of my sensitive data. Thank you all for the answers.
