I have a Dell Inspiron 1545. And I'm intending to upgrading this old boy. First is mouting a SSD, which is the Crucial MX200 250GB SATA 2.5 Inch. According to crucial.com, I can mount it in the case, where my 500GB HDD is being placed (sorry, I'm a technical noob so I don't know what's that called). But I still want to keep my HDD for work, because I've heard somewhere on Tom's that you shouldn't read/write much on SSD. So I am wondering if I could mount the SSD in my optical bay? Will it fit? Does the mounting require some special equipments?

Solution
If you don't need 500 GB's of storage, I would simply swap out the HDD for the SSD. An SSD will last as long as the HDD for most people, so that's not really a concern. You will have to reinstall Windows or clone it from the old drive to the new using a program like Macrium reflect free and an external drive or if you have the original Windows install disk, you can do it that way. If you want to keep the HDD, you can get a caddy to replace the optical drive.

Write cycles to the SSD has not been a concern for several years.
Anyone telling you this is simply regurgitating info they heard from some guy 5 years ago.

Any current SSD will last years in normal use.

Install the SSD in the normal slot, not the optical bay. A 500GB SSD will run about $150 for a quality drive.

Yes, I need 500GB's of storage. And I won't pay 150$ for 500GB of SSD. It's just expensive to me. So when I install my SSD, will I just need to put the Caddy with the SSD in?

OK...for the Crucial you are planning on buying...how much is it?

In any case, your OS drive really needs to go in the regular slot. The 'other drive'...you old HDD, would go in the ODD/caddy space.

I changed my idea, I will buy the BX200 which is only 85$ instead of that 110$ MX200. And the price is only half of a 500GB. I also understand why should I put my SSD in regular slot, but will the optical bay provide enough power for my HDD?

The SSD's usually come with a cloning software, right? Perhaps it doesn't, which cloning software should I use?
