Computer shuts down randomly

Hi,

For the last couple of weeks, my PC is shutting down on its own randomly. Then when I restart by pressing the restart button on the CPU, it shows the standard message..that the computer did not shut down properly...do you want to run in Safe Mode or Normal Mode? Running in Safe Mode does not really show up any error message. And when I restart in normal mode, it still DOES NOT show any error message, like BSOD, etc. I have already run a virus scan and Malwarebytes anti-malware scan. But the problem persists.

My system configuration is as under:

AMD Athlon II X3 440 Processor on MSI 880GMA-E45 motherboard with 2X2 GB Kingston DDR3 RAM

OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit.

Please help!

Thanks a lot for your response, guys! I am afraid my stupidity is the culprit here. I just happened to look at the CPU unit, which is placed on the floor. Guess what? The air vents of the CPU were clogged with a thick layer of dust! I opened it up and did the needful immediately. I also realized I hadn't cleaned the processor fan for ages and did so as well.

The PC is now running since morning without shutting down even once. I am keeping my fingers crossed but hopefully the problem is resolved.

Just a related query here. The CPU keeps emitting a loud humming noise, which increases with increase in running time and number of applications running on the system. This noise has always been there with my system for the last 5 years. I understand that this sound is from the processor fan [or is it the CPU fan at the back?]. I checked the setup values of the following parameters:

AMD Cool 'n Quiet Feature: Enabled
Adjust CPU Ratio Setting: Auto

Also, additional CPU cores are not unlocked.

Is there anything I can do to reduce the humming noise without affecting the computer performance?

Try cleaning the fan. However, many times, if the motherboard is a little bit loose, it might cause it to keep moving/vibrating when the fan spins fast, so check if all screws are hardened.

Also, check if there are any wires near the fan. In general, just don't let anything in there vibrate. If that didn't work, then just get used to the sound, or use a software such as SpeedFan to reduce fan's speed slightly.

Will using software to reduce fan speed affect system performance or cause CPU overheating?

Depends on how much you decrease it, you need to test it by yourself. The performance will drop only if the CPU overheats, so it uses a technology called "Thermal Throttling" which makes it decrease its clock speed to cool itself down.

The CPU fan's purpose is to move the heat away from the heatsink so that the heat would keep getting transferred from the CPU chip to the heatsink, because if the heat remains on the heatsink, the new heat (Energy) wont find a place to go to, and according to the physics law: "Energy does not get renewed nor disappears."
