Wait for GTX 1080 or buy a GTX 980ti now?

Hi I am building a machine now. I plug in my machine a very very old GPU card (~7 years), and the machine is very slow though the other parts are brand new. I suspect that the poor GPU leads to the slow speed. Do you think so?

I know from some websites that GTX 1080 will be released in this May. Do you think it is worthwhile to wait for 1080 or just buy a 980ti now? Do the price of 980ti drop dramatically when 1080 is released? Some one also suggests me to buy a GPU around $100 now and sell it after I buy a new 1080 in May. What do you think?

Hope to get your advise. Thanks.

I don't think the 1080 is the replacement for the 980 Ti. If it's the highest end GPU then a 1080 might match the performance of the 980 Ti. Something a lot of people don't understand though, is that the features such as faster memory, and so on, is just a baby step towards better tech. NVIDIA would never make bad business decisions, they're going to make sure that the increase is small but not so small that people don't want to upgrade.

a 980ti is still the fastest card (with overclocking) you can get and it will be high end really untell the next nvidia gen after volta comes out i would get a 980ti if you can get a good price and if not you can get a cheaper card like a 950 or something and later sell it and later see the next card (i swear if its called the 1080.....) and then go from there

At the very least wait a few days and see what comes out of the GPU Technology Conference this 4-7 April - http://www.gputechconf.com/

It's organized and sponsored by Nvidia, their CEO is even doing a keynote presentation so I'd be truly surprised if they didn't release some form of information about Pascal in the coming days.

Currently the price of a 980ti is around $600. Does the price of old cards significantly drop down when new cards come out? Which website do we usually sell GPU cards? eBay?
