This has started happening a in the last few days and I don't understand why! One by one, the various windows open, most often Chrome, will start to lock up. I can open things like Skype and Steam, but once the window opens, it then freezes as well and can't be closed. If I put the cursor over the taskbar, it turns to the blue circle. If I leave it for long enough, the screen sometimes goes black but I can still see the mouse over it. Once it starts, I can't ctrl + alt + delete or anything, I have to hit the restart button.

8GB RAM and 256GB SSD

Yeah, but it's a completely fresh install of Windows anyway so there was nothing, there's barely anything installed on the machine. I'm thinking it's a hardware fault.

It could be drivers. Have you tried going into Computer Management yet to see your system events? I haven't used Windows 10 yet, but I know in Windows XP to 7 you can right-click on computer and open Management from there. Next, go into Event Viewer and take a look around in there.

I updated the BIOS and the freezing hadn't happened since until yesterday, and again today. I've been using the event viewer each time but I can't find anything except the one after rebooting that says the system was unexpectedly shut down.
I've also run the Windows Memory Diagnostic several times, which bought up nothing.
