I suspect of GPU/CPU overheating

Hello, So I recently cleaned my pc and took out the cpu heatsink and gpu, dusted it and replaced. It was all fine but then last night, while in a match of csgo , The screen flashed and many weird things happened, then it froze, csgo crashed, and I turned it on again as I didnt want to get a cooldown, it happened again this time my entire pc crashed, restarted and joined again, had to abandon. Today while watching one of the tournament matches it happened again it crashed with black and green stripes ( i tried to take a picture but I was too late) then while turning it on it got stuck in what I assume is called a boot loop, turn it on and it just goes back to the start screen. I took a video.

Could this be the product of some overheating, and if so should I replace the thermal paste?

If you remove the heatsink, you should clean the thermal paste and apply new thermal paste. Also you should actually check your temperatures so you're not guessing.

I don't think this boot loop is because it's overheating now. I think when it crashed it may have messed up the OS. Have you tried last known good?

If you get it running why don't you watch your temps with MSI afterburner or something like that. Play a game and alt tab in the middle of it and see where they are sitting for both GPU and CPU. If you didn't clean off the thermal paste with alcohol there should still be some in the pores on both mating surfaces. I don't think the temperature level would be so drastically different where it would shut down right after booting. Is everything hooked up properly? I've heard of people not putting there heatsinks back properly, leaving them off, etc.

Yeah, ive had a similar problem. You just have to open up your case and let the air get to your GPU, ofcourse cold air but not to much. let it hover around 20-30 degrees.I left my case open for 5hrs and i usually get the BSOD but no BSOD so far no BSOD.Hope this helped! :bounce:

You can try to repair your windows with it, see it that helps. Probably not the issue all together though.

Hi,before doing this I would like to update , I have already done a fresh install of Win7, and it goes well, EXCEPT when I install the graphics drivers. After installing the graphics drivers (R9 270) (amd crimson 16.3.2) it goes into the same boot loop. Are the steps the same?

This is part of the reason why I never update anything. Windows should make a restore point for when you installed the driver unless you disabled system restore. Maybe the driver is conflicting with other older ones.

Tried all that, Still same problem, Oh well, I got into contact with someone at Sapphiretech ( I have a sapphire card) aand I guess ill see how this goes

The idea is to do a BIOS update BEFORE you install windows and your MoBo manufacturers latest drivers.

1. Never let Windows Update install hardware drivers
2. Be aware that you will not get TS from MoBo vendors (i.e. Asus) if you do not have latest BIOS installed
3. Be aware that the latest hardware drivers, may depend upon having the latest BIOS installed.

Undoubtedly, as we have already seen, graphics drivers was not your original issues. Using F8, would have stopped any drivers from loading.

Clearing CMOS did solve your initial problem. The reason I recommended updating the BIOS at that point as you had nothing to worry about. Doing it after installing the OS could wipe out several hours of effort if the update goes awry

So with the BIOS issue out of the way, you indicate that your system install went south when loading the GFX drivers. Obviously, as you had no GFX drivers installed right after installing OS, booting into safe mode prior to installing would accomplish nothing as prior to that there was nothing to remove.

At this point I would.

1. If you want to get BIOS update out of the way, it's best to do it now whether or not it is related to your problem.

2. Boot into BIOS and use the "restore default Settings" option.

3. Reboot and check BIOS settings to make sure everything is correct

4. Format disk and install windows

5. Install original hardware drivers that came with your equipment of DVDs

6. Stop Windows from ever down;loading / installing HW drivers
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2500967

7. Run windows update the 16 times or whatever it needs till it says "no updates found".

8. Create system restore point
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Create-a-restore-point

9. Reboot

10. Install latest drivers from manufacturer's web sites for all hardware except GFX card

11. Reboot and create a restore point.

12. Install latest WHQL approved GFX driver

If you crash again, boot and press F7 to load w/o drivers. Restore to the latest restore point. (step 11).

At this point I'd contact tech support from your card vendor.

Well, thank you for your help, but I think I have been bested by a GPU that is RIP. I am either going to see about its warranty and getting a replacement or buying a whole new gpu. You were very patient, and for that I thankl you. My GPU lived a decentish life of about 2 years and it has moved on to GPU heaven, where the good gpus go.
