Hi everyone

I am thinking on upgrading my current system with new motherboard, ram and cpu.

my current build consists of the following:

i5-2400
8gb ram ddr3 1333 mhz
gtx 970

I was thinking on getting an i7 6700k with ddr4 ram and z170 board

so the question is of course if the upgrade is worth it ?

i mainly use my pc for gaming and some internet browsing

thanks

pcbuilduk,

You should only get the i7 6700k if you do any video editing/rendering. Don't forget, you also need DDR4 RAM. Get the i5 6600k.

No. First thing is that you won't need to upgrade your CPU as the I7 series is only for video editing and the current CPU you have is fine. DDR4 isn't necessary, won't change your gaming experience. Instead of wasting $400 on those stuff that weren't needed, get a better GPU. If you don't have 2-way sli motherboard, upgrade then buy another 970 so you can have 2 way SLI. A 970 costs $320 + The Motherboard which supports SLI (if you don't have one) = $400

thanks for the answers

Well, in terms of troubles in gaming its really hard to say. Generally speaking, games run at 60fps but its not necessarily a stable 60 fps... I have a 2 monitor setup so I often watch twitch on the second monitor while playing games or just game web browser opened to check stuff on the internet and that's when the game starts to lag a bit (fps drops).

my motherboard is P8H67 from Asus

I think an I7-6700K upgrade is not a bad idea. But to make sure, monitor your CPU usage with software such as HWinfo, and look at each core, and see if any core is at or near 100% when doing this stuff.

Or open Task manager, and right-click the CPU usage graph, and change the graph to logical cores to show the graph of each core.

just now while playing world of warcraft and watching a stream on twitch and having 4 more websites open the cpu usage is 90% which results in 30 fps drops in WoW.

Earlier on while playing other games such as GTA 5 or The Division the cpu usage is always at 99%

why not buy i5 6600 and sell your curent gpu and buy a gtx 1080? i'm sure you will be surprise about the improvement.

i7 is overkill for gaming and cost too much. if you want to see more improvement in fps then definitley buy the gtx 1080.

instead of buying i7 put the budget in gpu.
