Hello! I currently have a Dell XPS with a AMD Phenom II x6 1045t processor. The computer was a beast when I bought it but is starting to show its age and can no longer smoothly play most new games on the market without some lag and overheating. I think the computer has some life left in it and I'd like to upgrade the pc I have and not replace the whole thing.

The problem I have is I have no idea what's compatible with the system I have now. I want to replace the cpu and video card for sure but not sure if I should swap the mother board as well. I'm also sure that my cooling system isn't up to par either. Any help and advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Sorry for the noob questions.

This is what I know about my pc.

CPU: AMD Phenom II x6 1045t 2.7ghz
Memory: 8gbs RAM
Video: AMD Radeon HD 5670

???... I guess you have to see what guy got to work on it ? you read what they said about aftermarket parts from that one link ..

''Our warranty does not cover non-OEM video cards NOT on our list. Ultimately, it will be up to the XPS 8700 Team and our Legal Team to decide if Dell is going to allocate resources to fix an issue with non-validated, non-tested 3rd party hardware. All I can do is funnel the data to them. Below are the Dell validated/tested OEM video cards for the XPS 8700 and our 460w power supply =''

No it's a desktop. I'd like to spend less than what a new computer would cost but let's say less than $500

Replacing the hard drive with an SSD is an instant upgrade and very easy to do if you're willing to take the cover off the laptop and ground yourself. There are lots of videos on YouTube that demonstrate the procedure. There are various programs that can create an image of your old hard drive and install it on your SSD. Make sure the Windows COA (Certificate or Authenticity) is valid before you start.

A high-quality 500GB SSD costs about $150. If you tell me which XPS model you have, I can make some specific recommendations.

as far as the cpu goes I guess you have to look at dells upgrade list [like you do any brands motherboard]

if you go with a newer card like the gtx 900's you need to look at updating your boards bios to bios A-10 that was released to support newer cards

you did not say what model you had like is it a 8700 or a 8300 ?

just be sure you understand there disclaimer ''

Has anyone had the motherboard out of the machine? Overheating is often caused by failing to replace the thermal paste between the CPU and the heat sink. I've seen lots of systems in which it's obvious that the last person didn't bother.

Thanks for your replies so far. I've never had the motherboard out so I'd have to check between the thermal paste. It's a Dell XPS 7100 which is about 5 years old. It's been pretty much rock solid since new but it just seems to struggle with playing any games these days. Normal web browsing and streaming aren't an issue. I regularly open the case to blow the dust out and the fans all work as well.

looking over this seeing nothing about it at dell I don't see where you got much of a upgrade path ?? todays games maybe getting a bit much on it older games may still be fine ??

I looked at the latest [and only] bios and it was from 2011 ? so where you stand on a newer card like any gtx 900 series maybe of question like you seen from what I gave above on the xps8700 ??

overall it maybe getting time to do a today build with some backbone ??

I would re do the paste with some good stuff . and see how that may go

tough call all you can do is the best you can with it ..

good luck

Thanks for your honest answer. Very helpful. What about upgrading the video card? I currently have a Radeon HD 5670 card. Can I upgrade that without changing anything else? If so what do you recommend?
