I just wanted to upgrade my Dell Optiplex with the best processor it can handle and I read around that its not compatible with i7 and i5 3rd Gen. So i just want to know is i5 2500k is a good choice to buy.

Solution
*I believe the highest supported CPU is the:

i5-2500

It's approximately $100 used on EBay. Unless you have a dual-core or significantly weaker quad-core there's not much point in upgrading. If gaming the i5-2500 isn't too bad.

An i5-4590 is only around 15% faster and it's rarely a game bottleneck.

If you want better advice:
- current CPU?
- reason for upgrading? (gaming, video edit..)
- if gaming, what GPU do you have (if crappy, it may make more sense to buy a GTX750Ti for example)

The stock cooler may also get pretty loud when the i5-2500 heats up. There are nice, small coolers but it's hard to recommend spending too much money without knowing details.
Hey,
You need to find the motherboard model. You can try using CPU-Z.

I'm not sure if you can then Google that and find the CPU support list or not. Just to be clear, having a supported SOCKET does not mean a compatible (physically) CPU will work.

The BIOS must have the CPU listed, which is why sometimes a BIOS gets an update with new CPU's added. A pre-built system may not have CPU's listed that they didn't offer for that model or similar models.

Other:
What performance difference you get would then be based roughly on the Max Turbo value difference between your CPU and the best supported CPU (and whether there is a CORE difference).

In general, if you have a quad-core already it may not be worth it.

Currently my Optiplex 390 SFF has H81 Motherboard, i3 2120 w/ Radeon 5450 512MB. I use this pc to record Minecraft videos usually i get 60+ fps but I want to be able to livestream and have less render times when editing.
