Can anyone recommend the best motherboard, CPU, tv card, to work with such a build -

4k video (HDR, new hdmi, h.265), 4k gaming, htpc (kodi), tv card (for live tv streaming from a new sky satellite dish), and to work with a virtual reality headset (Oculus Rift) - the system will also be useful (if it will have no impact) on providing video and music editing
- the motherboards I have read need a good amount of PCI lanes etc to work well with graphics, cpu and so much more etc - so as much advise on this is welcome

z170 = more(but not much) per core perf from skylake, but less cores
x99 = more cores, possibility of more PCI-E
for the editing and such I'd go for a 5930K(x99) if you can afford

x99 offers more cores (6 or 8 vs 4), more ram slots (8 vs 4), more pcie slots, better upgrade path than z170. On the downside, it consumes more power than z170 based build. Here is a x99 based 4k build in your budget.

That's right the gpu is a purchase later to better fit my 4k n vr wants. For now its to have the build in place for most things and its 'future proof' if you like. So as long as my motherboard cpu ram are a build that will support my 4k gaming video n editing along with vr plus tv card and future connection to my surround sound (dolby atmos etc) this system will eventually stream.off a home nas box of all our video music tv show library plus games local as well as live tv and kodi.

in that case go with this/something like this. The second SSD can be taken away if it's too much money. And it'll look funky
if you want, now that I think of it, you probably want something a little smaller, since you want it to be an HTPC. I was thinking more Workstation because of the video/music editing, my bad. I'll draw something up a little smaller.

Smaller, probably prettier. You should also be able to keep the CPU at at least 4.0Ghz constant, possibly even more. Can also add more fans, optical drive, wifi card

Hi. 010themaster010

Thank you too for the advise. So a quick question on the 2 builds. Will these provide me the future proof (as you can) and meet my needs for the 4k, gaming movie vr as well as video n music editing

Again cheers to all advise

They will both be "future proof" to an extent but neither of them have GPUs so those will have to be purchased separately. If space is not an issue I would recommend the first build as it will be much easier to build and upgrade. The second is smaller and will be harder to upgrade GPUs in the future because of how it is built. The first one also has a larger cooler offering more overclocking performance to boost the lifespan of the PC. I have noticed one mistake in the second build and that is the case price. I did not notice that the price was not included so you would have to take away the SSD in the second one for a smaller one and the Case will be £140. If you have enough space I recommend the first one. If you have less space and are comfortable building in that case I recommend the second one. At this price they will meet your needs for HTPC use and editing, but for gaming you will need GPU(s). GPUs are also able to help with some editing software to speed things up.
