I have two mobo's, FM2 and AM1 sockets. Will on of these work with the fx 8350 or do I need to buy a new one and if so what is the cheapest one?

Solution

Go for an ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 or a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3. Both are solid boards with solid thermal design. The CPU will run happily and will not throttle, you can even overclock! It HAS to be an AM3+ motherboard. Since these FX chips consume a lot of power, in your case the FX-8350, low end boards won't be able to handle your CPU properly, the ones I mentioned are perfect and are not terribly expensive.

Side question to you. Is this one good tho? Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P

The -UD3P is a great motherboard if you want to OC your FX-8350. I've got a Rev2 that works just dandy.

The board technically shouldn't be running 125w CPU's it really can't handle them , thermally or power wise.
That would be incorrect. The FX-8350 is qualified for that motherboard.

It will Turbo. It will run 8 cores @ 4GHz 100% load. When stressing at 100% over an extended period, it will run 6 cores @ 4GHz and down-clock 2 cores to 1400GHz while dropping the volts.

There is a setting in the BIOS (*APM*) that allows you disable the core-throttling if yee wants to take yer chances ... not advisable for the "long-term"

I actually wouldn't, since I used to have a Intel i5 4460 that actually is more expensive than the fx-8350, but it doesn't perform that well. I sold my i5 and motherboard and bought a fx-8350 and a MSI 970 Gaming and even had some money left for a other upgrade. Also, the AMD performs better while being cheaper.

Yes it should, you should be good to go! That board is good too! :)
