I am planning to build a gaming PC in May 2016, but on a very strict budget. I want to get the gtx 970 for my build but I can't afford it. With the new Pascal cards coming out, will the price for the 900 series go down ??
The price of cards like the 980ti might not...but will the cost of the 970 go down by $100/$150 ?? If yes then I might wait for 2 or 3 more months

PS: I am not interested in getting the Pascal cards as I am a 1080p gamer, and the 970 can pretty much run all games at 1080p 60fps.

It's pretty doubtful. Actually, the prices of most AMD cards went UP when the 3xx series cards were released and the same happened with the 7xx series Nvidia cards when the Maxwell cards came out. As of yet, aside from a few sales here and there, I've not seen the prices on any GPU card series drop when the next series hits the shelves, except on used models.

The reason they go up is because anybody who already has one of those cards and needs another for SLI or Crossfire will find them in short supply since they generally stop manufacturing older cards once a new architecture is finalized.

You will see a reduction in price, it will be more considerable than past cycles because nvidia is a one cycle behind on pascal and the advances far exceed the usual bump in specs for a typical platform release. Current cards are behind the trend of the demands high end buyers expect of them. Vendors know this and will have to clear current stock before Q3 begins

It depends on how long you are willing to wait but in the long run certainly yes, will we see a big price drop with in weeks probably not but prices won't stay where they are after a few months unless there is still demand to keep the prices inflated. Next gen is likely to come with better power consumption and performance at a good price at least from AMD so we will see. If you are unable to wait till third or fourth quarter then start searching for something that can help tide you over until something better comes along. I don't have big expectations of Pascal but hey I have gone retro long time ago lol.

Because they won't have HBM.
