to answer your second question, we wont know until both cards are released and when dx 12 is more widely used and considered mainstream, right now not many titles are being built from the ground up with dx12, their all pretty much ports.

first question, because its going to be some time before (as stated above) dx 12 is more widely used and becoming the standard. by then there should be new cards out by both manufacturers that will outdo the current cards for cheaper anyways.

Gears of War Ultimate Edition on PC is a Disaster for AMD Radeon Gamers

Look, I'm not trying to say that the 390 won't end up being better than the 970 in DirectX 12 games. If I was buying today I would probably go with the 390. The point is that I wouldn't use one game that relatively few people will actually play as the definitive proof that AMD is better at DirectX 12. Gears of War Ultimate Edition is one of the first AAA DirectX 12 games and it runs much better on Nvidia. Just like with DirectX 11 it's going to vary depending on the game.

Gears Ultimate Edition was completely redone for the Xbox One last year. This is a PC port of that version, not the original PC version from 2007.
