i have a article snippet from crow.com here. it says:

Another type of home internet connection is through a satellite connection. A Satellite connection requires either the lease or purchase of a small satellite dish. Because of the high initial cost of the hardware to connect with a satellite connection getting a DSL connection would be more economical. Satellite connections are popular in rural areas where a DLS connection isn't an option due to coverage limitations.

so, id have to lease or purchase a dish from the provider for my home internet connection? is a lease just another word for paying a monthly fee for the use of the dish?

and what about the connection speed? how fast can that be at the slowest connection speed? and what is the fee per month for that? is the speed 10 or more times slower than dialup 26kbps?

Solution
It would probably vary by where you are, and it's been a while but before I know you had to have a dialup connection that basically was your "upload" stream, that sent your webpage requests, etc, to the server which went up to the satellite and then down to you for your "download" stream.

So it'wasn't good for gaming, lag was like 800ms, not 80ms which is even a bit high for gaming.

They may have two way satellites now, I don't now, but I still don't see speed, latency or anything being good about besides email, surfing. no gaming, no streaming, probably crappy downloading.

If your choice is dialup at 26kb or satellite the satellite is much better. It tends to be fairly fast for most things but as mentioned above there is high latency which makes many applications work poorly. Normal web surfing works pretty good and some video streaming is fairly good. Problem is they generally have fairly low caps on it and when you hit the cap for the month they downgrade your speed to almost unusable....I suppose it would still be faster than a dialup modem.

You can also look at cell phone provided networks. It tends to be fairly expensive but works better that satellite and most plans have higher caps.
