Hi. I recently got a new ssd and installed a fresh copy of a windows ultimate . Installed drivers from a cd included with a motherboard . And i wanted to update the windows so then i can get a free windows 10 but the updater is stuck and i dont know what to do. please help.

How long did you wait? The more updates there are the longer it takes. It's would not surprise me if you needed to walk away from it for an hour or so, maybe more if your internet connection is slow. Last new PC I configured at work, took a couple hours, just to tell me I needed to download 1.5 GB of updates, and that was just the first batch of them.

There's no need to install or update Win7 in order to get the Win10 upgrade. Just use the media creation tool - https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10ISO - to burn off a DVD or make a bootable USB key then format the SSD and do a clean install of Win10. When Setup asks for a product key, enter your Win7 one and it will automatically be converted to a Win10 licence.

You'll end up with a much leaner, cleaner installation than you would by doing an in-place upgrade and it'll be a darn sight quicker than going through all the Win7 updates.

maybe ill try that next time. i tried downloading windows directly from microsoft but the installation was stuck aswell ... :(

Just last week I had to restore a Windows 7 system from a year old backup. Windows Update took 2 hours 20 minute to find the 114 updates the system needed! If you didn't know better, you might jump to the conclusion that Microsoft had slowed Windows Update down on older systems to goad people into going to 10.

Good luck.
