Hi everyone, jusst a quick question here.

Should i get the intel i5 4690k with a Asus Z97M-Plus,

Or

A intel i5 6600k with a ASRock Z170M Extreme4.

The CPU will be cooled with a Cooler Master Nepton 240M.

I am aware of needing DDR4 with the Skylake also.

Is it worth the extra cost for the skylake? Plus the skylake board looks sexy!

I will be gaming, video editing, using photoshop and general usage.

I will have a EVGA GTX 960 SSC Installed Also.

Thanks guys!

If you are building a new system fro scratch go Skylake, CPU power wise it's a wash but you may as well start with the most recent platform.

Do you have 8 or 16GB of DDR3 you can use for this? If so, the i5-4690K. If not, the i5-6600K assuming it's not more than ~$40 more.

If you suspect you'll ever want an M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD, then you must go Skylake.

I have 16gb of 1866mhz ram for the 4690k. But would the 6600k with the newer motherboard be better? Its only an extra £20-30 or so combined.

Will the Skylake be better for overclocking since the ASRock board has a 6 power phase wereas the Asus only has 4 power phase?

I haven't really checked into Skylake OCing. My 4690k clocks like a champ but I wouldn't base a purchase on it as you don't know what you'll get in the chip lottery.

I wouldn't trust OCing as a deciding factor between CPUs. As CelicaGT stated, you don't know what you'll get in the chip lottery. I have a i5-4670k cpu myself and have not been able to run above 4.2ghz without a bluescreen. Even then, it peaks at high 80c+ on water cooling; thus it's only stable at 4.0ghz.

I just upgraded over the weekend from my AMD to the 4690K. I already had 16GB of DDR3 2133 ram. So the $100 or so for the RAM and the $20 difference in CPU cost plus lets say $20 difference for the mobo ... It was hard to justify the Skylake.

I wanted the Skylake, but when its $120-$140 more(in my situation) I can't make the numbers line up and feel good about it. I decided to add an H115i to my build. That made me feel much better overall since I got an additional upgrade.

Your mmv but if you have 16gb of quality ram, Skylake is a tough sell.

Well i already have the nepton 240m cooler. I can get the corsair vengeance 16gb DDR4 2400mhz ram for £55 (same as the DDR3 price) and the CPU is the extra £20 from the 4690k. Then for the Motherboard, its £115 for the ASRock Z170M Extreme4 and the Asus Z97M Plus is £105, so just £10 difference. So for the £30 extra cos is it worth it? I think so in my opinion
