Hi Everyone,

I'm looking to purchase either a Asus ROG Maximus VIII Hero or MSI Z971A Gaming M7 for my new build.

I've read a number of reviews on each motherboard and both seem to have their quirks and bugs, some fixable by BIOS updates others by not installing/using some of the supplied software.

While both motherboards other similar feature sets for what I'm after I was wondering which one is considered the better one to go for? Especially on items of usability, support, problem fixing, least number of problems, etc.

Any views or help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
StokieGreg

I really like everything. The only problem that I have had is setting the fan control in the UEFI. The screen would freeze and it took multiple attempts to get the settings entered. I decided not to use the 5 way optimization software, but instead go for a lean, low resource build. Of course, I can't comment on the sound since I'm using a sound card from my previous build. You should read all the reviews of the boards you are interested in on Amazon, Newegg, Asus forums, etc. The Hero was on sale when I bought it and I don't...

Thanks Bearman, when you say "quite happy with it" are there some elememts that you don't like? And if you had to choose again would you stick with the Asus Maximus Hero or go with a different brand/model?

I would have a look at the Ranger though. It lacks the LED lighting effects of the Hero and has two less SATA ports, but is otherwise quite similar. The VRM is different, but also contains 60A chokes and 10K capacitors. If I was buying today, I would go with the Hero or Ranger.

Steven Bassiri at Tweaktown did reviews on the Hero and the MSI M9. You should check them out.
