so my friend gave me his lenovo ideapad p500 touch which runs windows 8, so i can try to fix it. when i boot it up, it says checking media then says no bootable device then says to put in recovery media. i have tried many things to fix this but nothing seems to work at all. i was able to enter the bios and i made sure the hard drive was recognized which it was. so i dont think there is a hard drive problem. i even took the laptop apart and stored the important files on my computer so if i need to wipe the computer in any way i can do so. in the bios, the boot mode is uefi. in the boot sequence, there is the efi network 0 for ipv4 and ipv6, but the windows boot manager is missing in the sequence. i tried changing the boot mode to legacy support but nothing happened. i cant press f9 to change the bios to default, for some reason this does not work. i created windows 8 installation media on a usb and i booted from that. when i install a fresh new windows, it just freezes on setup is starting. i tried to repair computer with that but it says the drive where windows is installed is locked Unlock the drive and try again. i am stumped. i would apreciate any help.

also, im not wanting to spend any money on this. the reason he had me try to fix the laptop is because he didnt want to spend any money. im not going to take this in to get fixed unless there is absolutely no other way to get this working again. so i would prefer that suggestions on how to fix this are free and dont require to get this fixed somewhere.

Hi there Mr Turtle,

Unfortunately, even though the drive is recognized by BIOS, it could be failing.
So, my suggestion would be to attach it to your computer once again and test it with some of these: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
Look for reallocated/pending and uncorrectable sectors.
In case the drive has bad sectors on it, it should be replaced.

If the drive is in a healthy state, you can set the laptop's BIOS to defaults, reformat the drive while attached to your system -> place it back in the laptop -> try to install OS and see if the process would hang again.

Hope this will help,
