PC freezes at random occasions and then does not start up. I am guessing, PSU?

Hello all,

I am making a new post cause the one I started before was not as good and I did not receive the help I need (and quickly :) ).

I have been having problems with my new PC recently (i bought the components 4 months ago and built it myself). It froze at random occasions (eg while playing a game or while the PC was just idle) and i had to reset the motherboard in order for it to start up after that. That happened 3-4 times during a month or something. ( I am in the middle of the exams period and did not have time to investigate it. Anyway.)

Yesterday it happened again, but this time the PC would not start no matter what. However after keep trying (plugging in/out the power supply cable, reseting the moba etc) it managed to start up and showed me a black dos window informing that everything was set to teh default values and giving me 4 options : a-run set up, b-continue, c- load OC profile 1, d- load OC profile 2.
I just pressed continue and windows loaded successfully.

Now the thing is, what do i do to identify the issue and actually solving it.
First of all, is this definately a hardware issure? Or could it be even malware/viruses/windows etc issue?
If it is a hardware issue though (which has the highest possibility I guess), what do I do to find the faulty part and send it back for a new one?
I checked yesterday my RAM with memtest and it passed 100% without any error, and I also checked the SSD drive with CrystalDiskInfo and it also seems 100% healthy. So I guess they are not the problem.

Guys I really need some advice on that thing as I really need my PC to be stable again as soon as possible.
I would appreciate your effort in helping me.
(if I forgot to mention anything, just ask :) )

Ok, first of al.. the black screen you get are because you start several times in a row the pc, then most of main boards when detected that kind of switch on-off reset the bios values to try to run with default values at CPU, Memory, voltages, etc...

If when you get the bios reset it works again then it's pointed for a too agresive overcloking on some element, Cpu or Memory.

Try default (and safe) values for all the elements.

I will check right now both Malwarebytes and Adwcleaner.
Regarding temperatures, I am using Speccy and they are normal, but I cannot know if they are normal when the PC freezes, cause it is completely random.
About OC, I trying when I bought the PC to OC to 4.1GHZ from 3.5 but the system was not stable so I reverted back to the factory settings and it was working properly until 3-4 weeks ago when the problems started.

EDIT: I just checked with both software. Malwarebytes found 131!? threats - and i cleared them all. Adwcleaner also found some unwanted folders/files etc and I cleared them also.
Not so sure though that that will fix my problem. I do not know, but it seems likea hardware issue to me.
Or I was thinking, could updating the bios help?

I had already everything set to default values so I do not think that is the problem.

You are sure that when you tried to OC and reverted to factory setting reverted all the settings (for example by using the bios option to revert all the bios values to default)?
Normally problematic could be the memory (some bios specially for example with Xmp) and Voltages.

If would not harm.

Yeah I used a Reset to default option that comes with MSI mobas and I do remember that I checked and indeed everything changed. Moreover, I reseted, as I mention above, the moba (using those two metallic pins you know) a couple of times so I am pretty sure all the settings are back to the default.

I do not know... I am pretty confused. Why did it start happening latetly? Why resetting the moba using the pins worked, and yesterday it did not?
Can someone advice me on how to really find out what is really wrong?
I think it is one of: PSU, MOBA, CPU, overheating, Windows. And most probably, a faulty PSU. But if that is the case, why wasn't it malfunctioning from the beginning and it started now?

Could be serveral things and you will need to be checking one after another.

For example, the PSU have a lifetime and it decrease characteristics with time (due elements wear), it have several years at his back maybe it start to give more ripples on the rails or worse voltages values that are the ones that make that the system dont work properly.

On a CPU also with time due electromigration (specially on overclocked CPUs) start to be less stable and give problems with severe overlockings (that i suppose its not the problem) needing more voltage to get the same speeds.

I can understand that but i bought all the components for the PC four months ago so I do not think that aging is the problem... Everything should have working exceptionally....

(By the way yesterday I updated the BIOS through MSI live update since some people say that may help with my problem. Till now I see nothing different, apart fomr a bit higher temperatures (!!??!!??) when I was playing The division.)
MOBA around 50oC, CPU around 40-50, GPU (r9 380 which is quite hot) reached temperatures of 80oC, hard drives around 50oC
