Hi All -

Previously, I've been running G.Skill F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL (CL-9-9-9-24) [2x4GB] in my system and wanted to upgrade. I purchased the G.Skill F3-12800CL10D-16GBXL (CL-10-10-10-30) [2x8GB] because at the very least I would get 16GB, but want to see if I can get 24GB.

When I tried to install all four sets in the system (16GB in DIMM 2 and 4, 8GB in DIMM 1 and 3), the system failed to boot. When I took out the 8GB and left the 16GB in, the system booted just fine. I reinserted the 8GB and the system booted once again (even showing 24GB in Windows), but sometime during the night apparently restarted and failed to reboot again. As of right now, I just have the 16GB piece in there and the system seems to be running fine.

After some research, I found out the 16GB SPD is 1333Mhz (even though it is rated for 1600) while the 8GB SPD is 1600Mhz. If I want to go for 24GB, I have the following questions:

1.) Can anyone say for sure these sets are not compatible?

2.) What is the appropriate placement for the DIMM slots? Should the 16GB set be in 1 and 3 or 2 and 4? Or is there some other placement for dual channel?

3.) What is the theoretical proper installation for this? Do I set the 16GB set to 1600 via XMP in BIOS and then install the 8GB set? Or is there a more complex process I need to go through?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Solution
''So leave the 8GB set out entirely? '' - yes use one kit or the other not both at the same time that new 16gb kit should do all you need [at least it does for me ]
so your saying you installed the 2 ''G.Skill F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL (CL-9-9-9-24) [2x4GB'' and the 2 ''F3-12800CL10D-16GBXL (CL-10-10-10-30) [2x8GB'' at the same time and tried to run them together ??

that's a no -no .... use one matched kit only don't mix

by the way F3-12800CL10D-16GBXL (CL-10-10-10-30) [2x8GB] is what I'm running in this Z87 now and works great

Yes - I installed both sets. Did I do any damage to the system or the memory itself by doing that?

Is it even possible to get these sets to work together?
