Hello all, looking to embark on my second ever PC build. First went really well for the last 5 years, but I'm pretty sure I'll be getting into VR (leaning towards HTC Vive). I could probably just upgrade some components, but I'm the type who would rather just start from scratch. Using the outline from the sticky, here is some initial information:

Approximate Purchase Date: within the next couple weeks

Budget Range: ~$3,500 - $4,000 (including monitor)

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Primarily gaming, and I'm thinking VR will become a significant portion of that.

Are you buying a monitor: Yes

Do you need to buy OS: Yes

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Newegg.com (really wish I had a Frys close)

Location: City, State/Region, Country - Eastern North Carolina, USA

Parts Preferences: Prefer Intel CPU and NVidia GPU. Pretty open beyond that.

Overclocking: Maybe

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe - looking at SLI but would like opinions on its worthiness

Additional Comments: Primary goal is a killer gaming/VR machine from a functional standpoint, but I'm not averse to spending a little extra cash to have it look cool.

Here's what I've been looking at so far, but really not locked into anything yet at this point:

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117403 ] Intel Core i7-5930K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.5 GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W BX80648I75930K Desktop Processor

Cooling: Could use some help here. I've been looking at a CLC system, but I'd probably rather lean towards solid air cooling to keep things simple. Never used any type of liquid cooling before and I'd prefer to avoid it. I don't plan to do any extreme overclocking anyway.

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132506 ] ASUS X99-DELUXE/U3.1 LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Intel Motherboard

GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487142 ] EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 06G-P4-4995-KR 6GB SC+ GAMING w/ACX 2.0+, Whisper Silent Cooling w/ Free Installed Backplate Graphics Card (x2 in SLI)

Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233885 ] CORSAIR Dominator Platinum 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000) Desktop Memory Model CMD32GX4M2B3000C15

SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA12K3X04938&cm_re=samsung_950_pro-_-9SIA12K3X04938-_-Product ] Samsung SSD 950 PRO 512GB NVMe M.2 Series PCI-Express 3.0 Internal MZ-V5P512BW with USB 3.0 HUB

Storage: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236622 ] WD Black 4TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD4003FZEX

PSU: Another place I could use some help. Just want something rock solid without unnecessary overkill.

Case: I could use some advice. I've looked at these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119225 ] Cooler Master HAF X - High Air Flow Full Tower Computer Case with Windowed Side Panel and USB 3.0 Ports

Monitor: Again, I really could use some advice here as I am pretty unfamiliar with display technology.

I think that's about it. I really appreciate any help y'all can give! One thing I really want to avoid is spending the time gathering components only to find they aren't compatible, don't complement features of each other, or physically don't fit. Thanks so much!

It's definitely overkill, and there will be new GPUs out in a couple months, but this would definitely last you quite a while. You need to overclock the CPU to match Skylake in single-threaded performance, but the dual 980Ti's should give you very solid performance at 1440P. That is a g-sync monitor I added, and a very good one. The only next step up would be the Acer Predator, but it's twice the price.

Thanks a lot for the info - I'll look into those components. On the memory - aside from the manufacturer difference, are there any positive or negative performance impacts from running 4 sticks of 8GB vs 2 sticks of 16GB?

That's a G-Sync monitor and 3-way SLI 980ti's for exactly $4000

Interesting, and thanks for the reply. I'm wondering what the performance would be like dropping to 28 PCIe lanes and running the 3 980ti's at x8 vs running 2 at x16.
