Windows Vista- External Hard disk error

I tried to use my external hard..but the only thnig that I can see is this message "the disk structure is corrupted and unreadable" ! and nothing else happens !! when i went to right click and then properties and then when i moved to tools menu-- Check now=== I recieved error stating disc check cannot be performed as windows cannot access the disc.. Please advise

Its either the enclosure or the drive inside it. But not all external drives use sata drives so to begine we need to know which make and model# drive this is. And do you have access to a desktop pc or another way to mount an external sata drive? Like a drive dock for example.

I'd recommend you to use the HDD manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic tool to test the drive for issues, instead of Windows' CheckDisk utility. If you are unable to find this tool on their official website, you can refer to some third-party suggestions from the community as well.
I'd also suggest you try using a different USB cable and even attempt to plug the external drive to a different computer and see how it will get recognized there. If you can successfully access it from anywhere, you should backup the files from it immediately. You should also go to Disk Management and check how the external is listed there.
