Constant hard drive sound

Hi all,

So recently, as in the past few days, one of my main hard drives has started to chatter constantly. If I make it recall information or open up a program from it I can hear the reader make a sudden stop, then it slowly revs back up into another round of noise. It's fully functional, and I've tried to defragment it to no avail. I mainly use my PC for recording and music production so the fact that my microphones are now picking up the clicking has become frustrating.
If it's something that can be diagnosed and fixed great, just hoping it's not time to move everything over to a new drive.

Solution
Hi there pkthxbai,

My suggestion would be to back up at least the most important data stored on it ASAP.
Then, you can perform some troubleshooting. It would be nice to start with testing the drive as popatim suggested.
Another thing you can try is to attach it with different cables(both SATA and power ones) to another SATA port.

In case the tests fail or show that the drive is failing, you will need to get another one. You can consider cloning this one onto the new one. That way, you will avoid the time consuming process of fresh OS install.
Some HDD manufacturer have their own cloning tools. You can use third party ones as well. :)
