Hiya,

I don't know too much about networking, but i have recently purchased an Asus RT-AC87U router.

I was wondering, can i simply just plug this in through the WAN port into my modem for it to work, after disabling router functionality on my ISP provided modem/router?

Also, will a default ISP modem bottleneck the Asus RT-87U?

Thanks

Physically yes - the modem's ethernet port goes to the router's WAN port. You can and should, as mentioned, disable the router functions of the modem. But you will need to configure your ASUS router to your network as the default/factory settings may not be the same as you have been using. Read the User Guide/Manual and plan out what needs to be done beforehand and ask further questions as necessary.

As for bottleneck:

If the speed/performance specifications for the ISP's modem/router are less than than the ASUS router the answer is yes. The network will only be as fast as the slowest device.
